Website Writing Guide

Web writing and presentation style

Paragraph structure

Commence paragraphs with a sentence that explains the topic of the paragraph. The opening sentence should be brief and descriptive. This allows the reader to assess at a glance whether the paragraph is relevant. This approach is supported by research that indicates Web users scan Web pages until they find something relevant to them.

Avoid presenting more than one main idea in each paragraph. Start a new paragraph for each new idea or topic.

The first paragraph above is a good example of this principle.
