About us

What we do

Website Criteria® researches and develops best practice criteria and guidelines for managing the life cycle of websites and intranets.

Our best practice criteria and guidelines include:

  • website benchmarking database – eg our benchmarking tool
  • planning documents – eg online marketing plan
  • how-to-guides – eg website writing guide
  • checklists – eg ten golden usability rules
  • methodologies – eg how to conduct focus groups for evaluating websites
  • research papers – eg user expectations online.

Our resources are based on extensive knowledge and experience advising about the Web and user interaction with technology.

Our accredited consultants are trained in using our research, methodologies and resources to improve their clients' websites.

Our motivation

We are passionate about the potential of the Web to make us all a bit happier, wiser, healthier and wealthier. Yet so much of the potential remains unrealised because many websites are not very good. But with a little help, many poor sites can be made into very good sites.

We develop and provide resources to help website owners and website professionals make websites more effective. This is good for them and for users. Everyone is better off.

Who we are

The company was founded by Steven Smith, one of Australia’s leading Internet consultants. He is Director of one of the most successful independent Internet consultancies in Australia, United Focus Pty Ltd.

He wrote and developed the www.e-businessguide.gov.au  website and the "getting started" booklet for the Australian Government. Steven has reviewed the websites of national organisations such as the National Archives of Australia, Elders Limited and reviewed the Australian Government Information Management Office’s Better Practice Checklists. He led the development of the www.flexibilityworks.dewr.gov.au website and co-wrote the www.staysmartonline.gov.au website, both for the Australian Government.

With a degree in Arts and Education, his first career was in teaching History, English and Computing in Adelaide, South Australia. He started his second career as an Internet consultant in 1995. Steven’s university training, real-life experience in classrooms and in presenting workshops on website usability around Australia and internationally, mean he has a profound understanding of the way people interact with technology and the factors that impact on the success of a website.

In over thirteen years’ consulting about the Internet he has accumulated invaluable experience and knowledge that he shares through Website Criteria.
